A scientific conference in Vienna sees the launch of the world's first computer network protected by unbreakable quantum encryption promising to deliver absolute secrecy.

Quantum Cryptography is completely different from those used by computer networks today which are typically based on complex mathematical algorithms which are difficult for hackers to crack, but not impossible given sufficient computing resources and time. The Quantum network system uses the "laws" of quantum theory, which are thought to be unbreakable.

The precise nature of the new cryptography is not only complex and expensive but far too complex for me to rewrite in a meaningful way. To find out more please visit the BBC at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7661311.stm.

Whether this new solution finds it way quickly in to everyday networking is unknown, but my guess it that like any new high tech solution it will only be available to the big spenders first. I would also imagine that counter terrorist/criminal organisations would also be worried by this method of transferring data.
