New IEEE wireless standard by 2010?

With the word of 802.11n still fresh in the air and letters slowly running out for wireless standards (having to double up letters now with things like 802.11aa, ac, and ad)

One letter actually stands out “V”.

Ignore the smoke and mirrors from vendors promoting things like airtime fairness, single channel Wi-Fi blankets and other obtuse concepts; 802.11v really has the potential of making things much better.

With Wi-Fi the problems are pretty much client related. Dropped connections, crappy performance or just the inability to connect are the root cause of IT staff’s headaches and having to support hundreds of clients whilst trying to troubleshoot these issues and provide a reliable service can be next to impossible.

But wouldn't it be even better if the network could tell the client what to do!

That's effectively what 802.11v does.

In laymen terms 802.11v is a wireless management system that allows configuration of the client whilst connected to 802.11 networks.

Expected for release in mid-2010, the proposed standard takes advantages of your existing infrastructure and Wi-Fi standards to help you understand what sort of devices are connected to the network and where, it promises things like;

  • Controlling client roaming to help ease congestion during peak usage times (this allows smooth client transitions between APs, which can minimize congestion during busy times and boost performance of applications such as wireless voice over IP)
  • Giving network admin’s the ability to gather network performance data from clients to see how the WLAN is running
  • Timing synchronization (useful for when you're streaming multimedia to things like Wi-Fi speakers)
  • Improving the battery life of mobile devices and improving the power drain from access points by having clients dynamically reduce and increase their own transmission levels as needed
  • Real Time Location Services (RTLS) technology that provides a high-level of wireless client tracking
  • Minimizing interference between Wi-Fi stations and APs by arbitrating transmissions

So watch this space, 802.11v represents a major step forward (if and when it comes).  In the meantime, use the hell out of antenna-based beamforming to solve the rest of your Wi-Fi problems. :)

Two neighbouring schools, Bordesley Green and Kingsbury School and Sports College, share ICT recommendations on implementing better wireless.

“We were surprised by how simply we were able to take the system offsite and set it up to trial. It really was plug-and-play and it runs seamlessly in the background with no problems,” said Ian Mitchell, ICT strategic manager at Kingsbury School. “Being able to test before we committed to buying our own Ruckus system really reinforced Bordesley Green’s recommendation and enabled us to make an informed buying decision.”

“We’re seeing a large increase in WLAN uptake in the education sector, as more and more schools realise the benefits that reliable Wi-Fi can bring,” said Mark Power, wireless security specialist at Net-Ctrl.

Ruckus Wireless Delivers Smarter Wireless LANS
It isn't here yet and may not come but it's incumbent upon organisations to prepare for it.

The global industrial and social concern and preparation regarding pandemics has by some organisations been largely put on the back-burner, that was until the news from Mexico this weekend has encouraged decsion makers to re-evaluate their strategies.

Swine Fever has re-awakened interest in contingency planning for public and private bobies who want / need to continue to operate whilst movement restrictions are imposed by government. Similarly company bosses will dis-encourage their work force from coming in to work if individuals have flu-like symptoms. Without IT remote access infrastructure in place many organisations will be badly hit by loss in production at a time when they can least afford it.

Simple, inexpensive and readily available products are already proving invaluable, enabling key employees, customers, agents, contractors etc, to gain secure access to data and applications whilst away from the office.

Net-Ctrl have a wealth of experience in providing systems and know-how to organisations of all sizes and complexity. Net-Ctrl offer the highly acclaimed Gartner recognised SecureAccess appliance from Juniper Networks which works alongside strong-user authentication packages from Aladdin SafeWord, Swivel (token-less) and RSA SecurID.

Whichever route you chose Net-Ctrl can promise a stable, secure and versatile remote access solution that will not only deliver during a contingency situation (In Case of Emergency) but for your long term business operation.

Almost two million PCs globally, including machines inside UK and US government departments, have been taken over by malicious hackers.

Security experts Finjan traced the giant network of remotely-controlled PCs, called a botnet, back to a gang of cyber criminals in Ukraine.

Several PCs inside six UK government bodies were compromised by the botnet.

Finjan has contacted the Metropolitan Police with details of the government PCs and it is now investigating.

A spokesman for the Cabinet Office, which is charged with setting standards for the use of information technology across government, said it would not comment on specific attacks "for security reasons".

Rally Against Cyber Crime

Security professionals are being called on to band together to fight the highly organised cyber criminals of the world.

The call was made at a San Francisco conference organised by security firm RSA - the largest event of its kind.

RSA President Art Coviello said the online fraudsters "are not bound by any rules of law" and "control massive armies of zombie computers".

Recent reports claimed cyber criminals had infiltrated everything from the US power grid to the Pentagon.

In his keynote speech to the conference, Mr Coviello urged the industry not to underestimate the global cyber security threat and the sophistication of criminals.

"Our adversaries operate as a true ecosystem that thrives through interdependence and constantly adapts to ensure its growth and survival.

Mr Coviello said that meant it was time for the security industry to come together to defeat the criminal element at large.

"We must evolve from acting independently to solve discreet information security problems to acting collaboratively to create a common development process.

Spam Spam Spam

Spam is nothing but rubbish lying in our inbox, waiting to be deleted, however if you count the impact on the environment, amounts to a staggering amount of CO2, contributing to global warming. The security firm McAfee released a report titled 'Carbon Footprint of Spam' (registration required) based on study by climate -change consultants ICF International.
The Carbon Footprint of e-mail Spam report estimated that 62 trillion spam emails are sent globally every year.

This amounted to emissions of more than 17 million tons of CO2, the research by climate consultants ICF International and anti-virus firl McAfee firl. Searching for legitimate e-mails deleting spam used 80% of energy. The study found that the average business user generates 131kg of CO2 every year, of which 22% is related to spam. Having a spam filtering solution in place could eliminate over 75% of the energy lost. It's highly unlikely for spammers to change their ways on knowing the damage their actions are causing to the environment.

Let's take as an example of digital-carbon- footprint which, scientist’s school look next.
spamFacebook: ComScore says 200 million people logged on to Facebook in December 2008 to check out photos, enter status updates, play Mafia Wars and answer endless mundane quizzes. Facebook may connect friends, but how much carbon is that zombie army of yours really spewing into the atmosphere?
What about online Pranks? Hackers are rumoured to be manipulating Time.com's poll to determine the world's most influential people. Take a close look at the top 10 you'll see it spells out 'marble cake’. One hacker has already voted 10,000.00 times and another plans to run an entire server dedicated to manipulating the Time poll. Can we blame these hucksters for the meltdown of polar ice caps?

We all need to feel guilty a bit, however we know how to resolve your problems.

The next generation of Super Broadband DSL is just around the corner, even for the UK's existing copper-wire network, according to Swedish Telecommunications giant Ericsson. The company is achieving 500Mbps transmission rates over copper cabling by using new "crosstalk cancellation" VDSL2 (Very High Bit Rate DSL 2) based modems to reduce noise interference.

Vectoring technology also decouples the lines in a cable (from an interference point of view), substantially improving power management, which can reduce power cosumption. The demonstration showed aggregated rates of above 500Mbit/s at 500m, bonding six lines. Super-fast broadband, allowing you to download entire films in less than minute, is coming to the UK.

The data rate is many times faster than the fastest ADSL2 services currently on offer in most countries. With products using the technology likely to be available within months, you may be able to add new broadband services such as video-on-demand over IPTV networks to your Christmas wish list.

April Fools Day stirred lots of panic. The Conficker computer virus, has infected several milion computers since November. Security expersts said '' They put too much effort into it to break things, they want to make money'' the worm can take control of unsuspecting PCs running Microsoft's Windows operating system. These PCs can be directed to send spam, carry out identity- theft scams and bring down Web sites by flooding them with traffic. After seeking new instructions begining yesterday the newrly refreshed worm, is still a potential ticking bomb.

One scary element is that Conficker's authors have been given the infected PCs peer-to-peer abilities, which allows them to update each other and share malicious commands through encrypted channels.
The agency, through collaboration with Skype to law enforcement agencies managed to intercept and decipher one of the VoIP-calls with their attacker, which according to the IP-address of this computer , was in Russia.

The story leaves us none the wiser to the identity of the unknown author of Conficker. Some sources, such as Vietnamese security firm Bkis, suggest that Conficker is the work of Chinese malware authors, but even this remains largely speculative.

Conficker worm has likely been in the April Fools' okes about it. However , there's still plenty of the time yet for the virus to clean out your credit card and other personal data so don't relax completely until you make sure Conficker isn't lurking on your computer.
